Okay, I have some tips to share that may help you get over this hump and I am confident that when you see the PURE JOY and GROWTH your child displays as a result of a sensory play activity, you will want to do another again and again!
Tip 1: Start in the BATH!
It is the easiest place to allow mess and clean up is a breeze! Water is an incredible sensory medium that can be a great starter for any hesitant parents out there.
Tip 2: Head outside!
The best place I find for sensory play! There are already tons of natural elements in nature to use as mediums and the ways to use them are endless. Water, sand, mud...the list goes on.
Tip 3: Dress appropriately!
If you are worried about your child’s clothes being ruined, designate a few outfits used only for messy play that you do not mind getting ruined. Another option is a long sleeve smock, mud/waterproof full body suits/waterproof boots, aprons, and/or overpants. If the weather permits consider a bathing suit or even a diaper for your little ones. My kids love rinsing off with the hose outside which is one of the ways that I ensure that our messy plan is not always messy!
Tip 4: Okay, so it is raining out and my kids already took a bath...now what?
Inside messy play...not as scary as it seems I promise! My favorite place is the kitchen because the sink is close by, the floors are wood, and the countertop or table give them lots of space to play. Throwing down a drop cloth, sheet, or towel under a table or on the floor where they will play makes clean up easier and my absolute go to is my robot vacuum! Also, don’t forget how incredible food and other household items are to explore.
